Fox News television host has decided to… host his own march on Washington. Coincidentally, it is on the 47th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King lead, “I Have A Dream” march. You know… just watch the video. Jon Stewart does a better job of commenting on this than I ever will or have the energy to devote to it.
Writer and social commentator/activist Tim Wise has written a piece titled “Imagine If The Tea Party Was Black” that has probably gone viral by now, (If not, it should, I’ve included it in this post) and yet after one begins to read it, paragraph after paragraph streams by as if it is like witnessing an editorial train wreck in progress. No it’s not because the kilobytes it takes up on the internet are not worth a dang, it’s because ya just can’t stop reading it until the sinking feeling it gives makes you feel as if you’re on a caboose watching train cars ahead of you roll off the track one by one and it’s only a moment before it’s your time. Your time to come to grips with the fact that there is something terribly wrong in America when it comes to race and privilege. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has always been a pertinent and revealing tale when it comes to how it correlates with world events, life and human nature. The idea that one can be lost and not understand that their compass and means to get home has always rested within, is a powerful reminder as to how we tend to complicate the most simple aspects of our lives and how we understand and view the world.
Dorothy’s journey into Oz also taps into another area that seems to elude us yet we know is true all along, life is not always as it seems. This premise is embodied in all the ‘Oz’ characters on some level but none more than in the Wizard himself. His facade of fire and brimstone scares and shakes all comers, yet it is merely a mask to a feeble man just as lost as those he is trying to guide home. The striking and intimidating persona presented through a curtain of fire and billowing voice is a puppet or as the world now knows him in his most recent incarnation; Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Ahmadinejad, is merely the front man for a Supreme Leader whom together are doing their best version of Willy Tyler and Lester or for you purist Paul Winchel and Jerry Mahoney. Either way, the dummy is saying one thing while the puppeteer is saying completely the opposite. The Puppet: We are enriching uranium for nuclear power. The Puppet Master: Oh, by the way did we tell you that we have a second enrichment plant and have enriched enough uranium to make a functional nuclear weapon? The Puppet: I am the duly elected President of Iran. Puppet Master: Detain any one who contradicts the election’s outcome. Read more...(704 words, 2 images, estimated 2:49 mins reading time)
