ECONOMY: BUSH AND MCCAINS NEW KATRINA

apr bush mccain 070425 ms 300x225 ECONOMY: BUSH AND MCCAINS NEW KATRINAToo little too late and as if the elephant were not in the room. Why are we surprised about the meltdown or dare I say, crash?  All the signs were there; a country at war digging deeper in debt, an economy that during his 2008 State Of The Union Address, President Bush claimed was booming, even though it was based on an inflated and economically false housing market that even at that time was teetering on the brink of oblivion. He was told, he was warned, however, in order to find some modicum of economic hope and show a shred of evidence that America was fiscally sound, he chose to feed the elephant peanuts rather than tell the truth. In doing so, President Bush, created a situation where his administration is once again playing catch up during a crisis just as it did during the horrific American experience of Hurricane Katrina.

Once again, it’s catch up. Once again the President of the United States is relegated to the role of the boy with his finger in a dike, trying to patch it up with gum called the FDIC. This is not the greatness of the United States nor its leadership. Why point a finger also at John McCain? In all his GOP bluster of being a “Maverick” and crossing party lines, and  finally that he has 26 years of experience in Washington, not once did he call on a special meeting with the leader of the Republican Party, President George W. Bush, to discuss what he perceived was coming down the road economically for America. Yet, now he speaks of commissions and regulations? Again, too little, too late and the writing was on the wall.

What good is all of John McCain’s experience in Washington if he can’t or won’t call on a friend who happens to be the President. Where was the “Straight Talk Express”, when the sub-prime market was clear in our rear view mirror and needed to be voiced on the highest levels of government? Where was the Maverick who touts how he will and has gone up against his own party? He was nowhere to be found and yet, now we should look to him for change.

The GOP was willing to stand on the dark Senate floor after the Democrats refused to set a vote on drilling, and they stood and applauded President Bush during his State of the Union Speech when he spoke of the fortitude of the American economy, and they are now standing behind a 26 year veteran of the Senate who did nothing as our financial crisis approached. Why didn’t John McCain say, “Guys pack it up, we’ve got bigger fish to fry”? Not to jump on the band wagon about this, but… when one can not remember how many houses one owns, should we and can we expect anything different? November 4 is a big day in America and as evidenced by the ripple effects of our economy, a big day for the world.
